Permanent Mission of Jamaica

Permanent Mission of Jamaica to the United Nations πŸ‡―πŸ‡²

We started off Thursday by visiting the permanent mission of Jamaica to the United Nations. There, we met with both the permanent representative Ambassador Brian Wallace and deputy permanent representative Ambassador Kurt Davis. As a small island nation Jamaica prioritizes working with other countries and participating in multilateralism within the United Nations. The Ambassadors both talked about how interconnected our world really is. If one country is facing a problem other countries are bound to face a similar one as well. With this in mind, the UN is the perfect forum for these ideas to be shared and discussed. One example that was brought up was the current state of education within Jamaica, primary school students have just started in person classes again. After two years, students have missed out on critical educational and social benefits of going to school. The Ambassadors shared that this concern of the lack of education within the younger generation shares similarities with issues that other nations are having as well. In terms of the logistics of the United Nations, Ambassador Davis mentioned how most deals/negotiations really happen outside of formal meeting situations. He explained how informal meetings over dinner or coffee is what pushes the sludge through the intricate system that is the UN. I would like to thank both ambassadors for taking the time to meet with us and we really enjoyed learning about an island nations concerns within the United Nations!
