Permanent Mission of Kenya to the United Nation πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ

767 3rd Avenue, New York, NY 10017

Our final meeting of this trip was with the Permanent Representative of Kenya to the United Nations, Ambassador Martin Kimani. Ambassador Kimani has come to New York to represent Kenya in their current capacity as an elected member of the security council. Ambassador Kimani has studied in Kenya, the US, and the UK, majoring in philosophy at the University of New Hampshire, and in war studies at King's College in London. After receiving his bachelor's degree from the University of New Hampshire he moved to New York where he worked at a hedge fund. After many years working in the industry Ambassador Kimani decided to get his PhD in London after which he returned to Kenya and joined the public service where he thought he could have a bigger impact. In the government, Ambassador Kimani has held many important positions such as the speech writer for the president and as his country's Director of Counterterrorism. Ambassador Kimani says that each job taught him a specific set of skills that would help him become an effective diplomat. After his role as Director of Counterterrorism, when Kenya was elected to the security council, President Uhuru Kenyatta nominated Ambassador Kimani to head the team of diplomats at the UN. As a fellow New Hampshirite we were in awe of the direction that his life has taken him. In addition to all of his work experience, a piece of advice he gave us was to expose ourselves to uncomfortable situations in order to become more used to them. We would like to thank the Ambassador and Lynn, his special assistant for taking the time to meet with us and we look forward to learning more about all the work Kenya does at the United Nations!
