Over the summer we had the pleasure of meeting the Political and Economic Consul of Iran Reza Esmkhani at the Iranian Consulate in CWB. As Iran was our first ever meeting, we were delighted to be welcomed back to discuss the work of the consulate and to listen to their perspectives. They have closely followed our work with Consulate Review and we appreciate their efforts in propagating Iranian culture in Hong Kong. We also discussed the possibility of working together in the Hong Kong community to expose a new side of Iran through the frame of tourism, natural beauty, and culture.
Outside of culture and tourism, we also discussed Dr. Esmkhaniโs journey to becoming a consul, as well as Iranโs views on certain global issues. Dr. Esmkhani is very well-versed in international law and politics, and yearns to work in Geneva at one of the international organizations. He also talked about the power of Western media, and how his countryโs perspective often gets shunned as their own media doesnโt have as powerful a presence on the world stage. For example, he explained that the movie Argo was an unfair representation of Iranians, and while some of the plot held truth, it didnโt tell the whole story, which he felt gave Westerners an often negative perception of an otherwise very beautiful country. Furthermore, Dr. Esmkhani challenged what he believes to be coercive American sanctions, believing sanctions from the US should not impact the bilateral relations between Iran and other countries such as South Korea and Canada, as it has in the past. We appreciated this frank discussion with the consul and with the current situation in Iran we stand firmly by our mission of engaging with all countries and believe it is more important than ever to continue understanding the viewpoints of others.
We thank Dr. Esmkhani for his hospitality, and look forward to future conversations with him.
