YES, we have FINALLY finagled our way to the US Consulate ๐ฅณ ๐ฅณ ๐ฅณ ๐ฅณ, after months of correspondence. Security was tightโmore than any other consulateโ we surrendered our phones, and required an escort throughout.
At reception, we met portraits of Biden, Harris, and Blinken, and a fascinating America-smelling bathroom. Escorted to a conference room, we met Ms. Siebengartner (Cultural Affairs Officer), and the Acting Consul General, Mr. Colin Crosby.
Mr. Crosby first introduced his background, working across Southeast Asia and South America, and spoke about how his high school history teacher put him on his path to foreign service. He also talked us through the U.S. foreign service officer exam process: After a knowledge test in several disciplines, personal narrative essays, an oral assessment and simulations demonstrate an applicantโs adaptabilityโsomething crucial for diplomats! In total, depending on the year, itโs rumored 600-750 are chosen out of 15,000-20,000 applicants (4% admit rate ๐คฏ).
One thing Mr. Crosby highlighted was Hong Kongโs importance to the United States, epitomized by a 179-year presence. When Hong Kong succeeds, he said, the U.S. does too. This is evidenced by a 70,000 strong American population and droves of American companies with offices in Hong Kongโnot to mention ~100 billion USD in U.S. foreign direct investment! Furthermore, Hong Kong is a key education bridge, with over 7000 Hong Kong students at American institutions.
Internally, the consulate is busy undergoing a staff transition, while externally, they promote U.S. culture through education fairs, sports diplomacy, and food events. Mr. Crosby also noted U.S. food exports to Hong Kong are crucial, due to local demand for quality. Despite recent controversies in US-China relations, Mr. Crosby noted the Consulateโs mission has largely not deviated: provide a platform for dialogue, and adapt when required.
After a short tour, we also came away with a HK-US pin and commemorative coin!
We thank Mr. Crosby, Ms. Siebengartner, and Mr. Ng for their time, and we hope to be back soon!
