At the Permanent Mission of Mali, we had the honor of meeting with the Permanent Representative, Deputy Permanent Representative and a Counsellor. The Permanent Representative, Issa Konfourou described to us their work in the UN, which primarily focuses on Peace and Security, Human rights, and development issues. We discussed the current crisis in Mali that began in 2012 and how that affects their work at the UN. Mali currently has 14,000 UN peacekeepers in their country working to secure territory and protect the people in efforts to once again create an open political environment. Ambassador Konfourou stressed the importance of strengthening the education system in his country as well as around the world, as he believes it is the solution to the social and development issues in his country. Additionally, the Ambassador expressed the need for solidarity and cooperation around the world. He is optimistic that countries, even during this ongoing pandemic, will soon see that it is vital that as a species we work together as one, and not leave anyone behind. Mr. Konfourou and his colleagues were extremely welcoming and offered terrific insight into their countries, as well as lessons we can take into everyday life.
